We begin with Max Goldberg's essay on Cinema Before 1300 , a new film by West Coast–based avant-garde legend Jerome Hiler. A discursive exploration of the luminous stained glass found in Gothic cathedrals across Europe, Hiler's "essay film" (for lack of a more precise term) is the centerpiece of a program starting May 9 at the Museum of Modern Art. The series will feature Hiler's densely allusive work alongside that of his longtime partner, Nathaniel Dorsky.
